WEATHER AND FLOOD SITUATION IN THAILAND
21 NOV 11
There are no changes from our update of yesterday- the situation is further improving and seems under control. Water levels in Bangkok's suburbs are receding and the city is starting to clean up. We think it is safe to say now: Central Bangkok will remain FLOOD FREE!
Tourist relevant areas such as Sukhumvit ( Soi 1 to 40, with nightlife, shopping and restaurants), Silom (incl. Saladaeng and Patpong), Siam Square (incl. MBK shopping center, Siam Paragorn shopping center etc.), World Trade Center (incl. Central World) are dry and accessible without any problems. All sights within the city are open for business.
There is still a huge amount of water to the north of Bangkok, that has to be drained to the sea, but it seems like the worst might be over. There may be occasional flooding, but we are most likely through the worst.
North of Bangkok the water is quickly receding and places like Ayutthaya are cleaning up and ready to welcome visitors back to the temples of the UNESCO World Heritage sights. Although some temples still have to be cleaned, almost everything is ready to be visited again.
More and more factories and industrial parks are going back "online".
Our transfers and tours are operating normal, with the announced changes.
A word about the foreign press articles, that are talking about a waste problem and the danger of an epidemic. Since the central areas of Bangkok are dry, there is no waste problem- garbage trucks are working normal. Tab water is on standard quality and drinking water or soft drinks are available in sealed bottles or cans- supermarkets are stocking up, after the "crisis" during the recent weeks. All reports on waste are related to the submerged areas, where it is -logically - a lot more difficult to get rid of the garbage. So far we also have not heard any news about waterborn diseases- and if there would be some, they will also not occur in the non- flooded areas, where our customers will stay or go.
1) Central Bangkok: sunny and dry/ no flooding. Survanabhumi Airport is operating normal and on schedule. The domestic airport of Don Muang remains closed, although there are plans to return to normal business soon. Skytrain and Underground- trains are running without any interference. Excursions in Bangkok are operating as normal, all major tourist destinations and hotel areas are FLOOD FREE. Chinatown, Flower Market and Grand Palace are very close to the river, so the situation here has to be monitored closely.
The weekend-market Chatuchak is open again and dry, surrounding areas are flooded aprox. 10cm. All klong- tours and boat traffic (dinner cruise) on the Chao Phraya is not permitted at the moment, but as we witnessed yesterday, the express boats are getting ready to pick up service again.
Kao Sarn Road and the closed by area is FLOOD FREE
2 ) Krabi / sunny day / bussiness as usual.
3 ) North Thailand No problems/ roundtrips are running as scheduled (with the announced changes in program) / no flooding / sunny .
4 ) Railways Traintraffic from/ to the North are still disrupted. Guests will be transferred overland with an additional overnight stay.
5 ) Cha Am / Hua Hin / Pattaya No problems/ sunshine and dry.
6 ) Phuket / Khao Lak / No problems/ occasional rain/ business as usual.
7 ) Ayuthaya Sightseeing is possible again. Please bare in mind though: the whole area has to be cleaned, some places may not be in the best shape yet. Groups and FIT guests have been visiting and staying overnight in the city with no problems reported.
8 ) Koh Samui No problems/ sunny and dry The situation will be permanently monitored and changes will be reported to you accordingly.
Important note:
Bangkok Suvarnaphum Airport is FLOOD FREE
